Invoking Action Agent from the back-end

Had anyone invoked an Action Agent from the back-end, e.g., using PL-SQL package or function, etc..

I have a custom agent that is currently invoked manually. Now there is a need to automatically fire this agent based on trigger from an external event (from a system outside of OTM). Is this possible, or should it be attempted at all ?
